چکیده

A smoothing principle for M-estimators is proposed. The smoothing depends on the sample size so that the resulting smoothed M-estimator coincides with the initial M-estimator when n → ∞. The smoothing principle is motivated by an analysis of the requirements in the proof of the Cramér-Rao bound. The principle can be applied to every M-estimator. A simulation study is carried out where smoothed Huber, ML-, and Bisquare M-estimators are compared with their non-smoothed counterparts and with Pitman estimators on data generated from several distributions with and without estimated scale. This leads to encouraging results for the smoothed estimators, and particularly the smoothed Huber estimator, as they improve upon the initial Mestimators particularly in the tail areas of the distributions of the estimators. The results are backed up by small sample asymptotics.

Two-step Smoothing Estimation of the Time-variant Parameter with Application to Temperature Data

‎In this article‎, ‎we develop two nonparametric smoothing estimators for parameter of a time-variant parametric model‎. ‎This parameter can be from any parametric family or from any parametric or semi-parametric regression model‎. ‎Estimation is based on a two-step procedure‎, ‎in which we first get the raw estimate of the parameter at a set of disjoint time...

A Measure Of Relative Efficiency For Location Of A Single Sample

A measure of location relative efficiency for location of a single sample. The question o f how much to trim or which weighting constant to use are practical considerations in applying robust methods such as trimmed means (L-estimators) and Huber statistics (M-estimators). An index o f location relative effi ciency (LRE), which is a ratio of the narrowness o f resulting confidence intervals, w...

On Mathematical Characteristics of some Improved Estimators of the Mean and Variance Components in Elliptically Contoured Models

In this paper we treat a general form of location model. It is typically assumed that the error term is distributed according to the law belonging to the class of elliptically contoured distribution. Some sorts of shrinkage estimators of location and scale parameters are proposed and their exact bias and MSE expressions are derived. The performance of the estimators under study are compl...

An EM Algorithm for Estimating the Parameters of the Generalized Exponential Distribution under Unified Hybrid Censored Data

The unified hybrid censoring is a mixture of generalized Type-I and Type-II hybrid censoring schemes. This article presents the statistical inferences on Generalized Exponential Distribution parameters when the data are obtained from the unified hybrid censoring scheme. It is observed that the maximum likelihood estimators can not be derived in closed form. The EM algorithm for computing the ma...

Robustness aspects of the generalized normal distribution

The aim of the paper is to study the robustness features of the generalized normal distribution. To this end the properties of maximum likelihood estimators of the location and scale parameters are investigated and compared with those of the Huber proposal II estimator and with those of the estimators of the Student t distribution.
